How is Sculptra® Different from Other Fillers?
Many of the lines and other signs of aging that appear on the face are caused primarily by dwindling levels of collagen, elastin, and water in the skin. Lines that form this way are known as static wrinkles, due to the fact that they are always visible—unlike dynamic wrinkles associated with muscle movement. Fillers are often used to address static wrinkles thanks to their ability to decrease the depth of creases and create a smoother surface or lift drooping skin by adding supportive structure. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are a popular treatment for targeting these types of wrinkles, but another ingredient often used for skin rejuvenation is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). This is the main active ingredient in a filler called Sculptra®, which our Boston-area team at Dr. Happe Medical Aesthetics offers. Here’s what sets Sculptra® apart from other well-known dermal fillers:
Like the other filler options, Sculptra® is an in-office injectable treatment, and there’s no recovery time needed after a session. Unlike Juvéderm® fillers, which contain hyaluronic acid molecules that retain large amounts of water for adding volume below the skin, Sculptra® contains PLLA. This biocompatible, synthetic substance acts as a collagen stimulator. Once injected below the skin, it encourages natural processes that result in increased collagen production, leading to improved volume and structure. This reduces the severity of common signs of aging, such as deep lines, crinkly skin, deep creases, and other folds, such as smile lines and chin wrinkles.
Swelling will be noticeable right away. Unlike some of the other filler options available, Sculptra® continues to work gradually over time to enhance the skin in a subtle, natural-looking way. The ultimate results begin to truly appear after two to three months have passed, and the effects of regenerated collagen can last for up to two years.
In addition to its applications for minimizing facial wrinkles, Sculptra® is also used off-label by some injectors for butt augmentation, cellulite treatment, and softening wrinkles on other areas of the body, such as the chest, elbows, and knees. The filler can create the illusion of increased muscle mass on the glutes, thighs, biceps, and other areas.
