How are BOTOX® and Similar Neuromodulators Priced?
Injections of botulinum toxin are an ideal way to counteract wrinkles caused by muscle activity in the face—such as crow’s feet, frown lines, or horizontal forehead lines. Dr. Holly Happe, a board-certified physician and founder of Dr. Happe Medical Aesthetics, often fields questions from people who are curious about BOTOX® cost at our Newton-area office, as well the costs of other botulinum toxin neuromodulators (medications that block nerve activity) like Jeuveau™, Dysport®, and Xeomin®. She explains that there are some differences between the four products—though they are all priced the same.
The best type of neurotoxin for you depends on your goals. Xeomin® doesn’t contain the same accessory proteins as BOTOX® and is a great choice for people who have built up a “resistance” to other muscle-relaxing injectables. Dysport® is more diluted than BOTOX®, diffuses more, and has a faster onset than the others. Jeuveau™ was the first injectable neuromodulator approved by the FDA solely for aesthetic purposes.
Cosmetic procedures are usually viewed as elective and the costs won’t be covered by insurance companies, so it makes sense to determine the complete costs involved and what you can afford before having injectables. A quick online search shows that the full cost of a BOTOX®-type injectable procedure in the Newton/Waban area ranges from $245 to $1,060 on average.
While some other practitioners charge a flat rate, or tally the price by vial, injection, or the area of the face where it is injected, our practice generally charges by cost per unit for BOTOX® and its other FDA-approved counterparts. Each section of the face may require a different number of units. For example, we use 10 to 30 units for forehead lines and two to five units for an eyebrow lift. The dosage for each type of botulinum toxin injectable will vary. For instance, Dysport® requires a greater number of units than BOTOX® to produce the same results, because it is more dilute, so we calculate that a bit differently. Your face will need to be assessed before the exact cost can be determined.
