Restylane®
Restore Facial Contours And Plump Lips In Newton And The Boston Area
Volume loss can impact the face in a range of ways. Some people notice hollows forming in the cheek area. Others see creases develop above and below the mouth. Once-plump lips may thin. It’s even possible to deal with all of these changes—and more—at once. Restylane® at the Boston area’s Dr. Happe Medical Aesthetics is a versatile solution that can address any of these problems by restoring vital volume.

What Is Restylane®?
Restylane® is not a single treatment but is a family of injectable cosmetic treatments. These are soft, transparent gel fillers, similar to Juvederm®. Like that filler, all are made with hyaluronic acid as their active ingredient. The moisture-loving molecule is important for adding volume and keeping skin hydrated.
Your body creates hyaluronic acid naturally to keep skin supple—among other vital functions in the body—but specialized cells in the skin make less of it as you age. When injected below the skin’s surface during a “lunchtime” procedure, Restylane® fillers blend in well and give the treated area a fuller and firmer appearance.
Which Conditions Can Restylane® Treat?
Aging skin tends to lose volume because of a gradual loss of collagen, fat, and more. In addition, it no longer holds onto as much moisture as it did in youth, nor does it create as much elastin to keep it resilient and springy. This is why many patients notice sagging and folds of skin around the middle and lower part of the face, thinner cheeks, and less defined facial contours as they get older.
Restylane® can restore fullness to the apples of the cheeks to create a more youthful appearance in the midface and pull up sagging tissues that create a look of jowls. It can also reduce the depth of moderate to severe wrinkles, including prominent nasolabial folds between the nose and mouth and marionette lines around the mouth corners. Additionally, it can mimic bone by providing structure to a weak jawline and building up the chin for people who have small or receding chins. The filler is ideal for patients who simply want to add a more structured, sculpted look to their cheeks or volume to lips that have always been naturally small or have shrunk with age.
Unlike neuromodulators, which inhibit contractions that cause wrinkles, fillers work to reduce the severity of lines not caused by muscle activity. Restylane® is designed for lasting, static wrinkles that develop due to sun damage, collagen loss, gravity, and other causes.
The various fillers in the family have specific roles:
Restylane® Lyft
Lyft adds volume to the cheeks, which creates more youthful contours. This serves to keep facial tissues elevated so they don’t sag and form jowls lower, along the jawline. It is also a good filler for a weak jawline or chin.
Restylane® Silk
Silk is intended for small, subtle boosts. The formula is suited for giving lips more volume and definition, as well as reducing the look of lip lines.
Restylane® Refyne
Refyne fills in nasolabial folds that form to the right and left of the mouth, extending up to the sides of the nose. It also works to smooth marionette lines below the mouth.
Restylane® Defyne
Like Defyne, Refyne is for facial creases on the lower portion of the face, but its formula is more appropriate for deeper, more dramatic creases.
Restylane® Kysse
Kysse is the first and only injectable lip filler to be manufactured with XpresHAn Technology™. It adds soft and very natural-looking volume to plump the lips while still allowing for flexible movement and a wide range of facial expressions. In addition to temporarily adding volume, this filler can also smooth lines around the upper lip—known as perioral lines.
Restylane® Contour
Age causes loss of fat and collagen from the cheeks, which results in the midface becoming thinner and sunken. Contour is a filler gel that augments the cheeks in a natural-looking way and can also address midface contour deficiencies. Its flexible, smooth design enables it to easily blend into the skin and soft tissue so that it can provide lift and volume. Its high flexibility allows it to move with facial expressions.
Restylane® can also be used to smooth out the backs of the hands, where volume loss reveals tendons and veins. Restylane L can be used to address volume loss in the tear trough deformity.

What Is The Newton Restylane® Experience?
Ensuring that Restylane® is the appropriate treatment for you is key to every treatment session. Dr. Holly Happe conducts a full medical history, as well as examines your face for signs of aging, before making any injections.
The specifics of each Restylane® session will depend on the area or areas targeted for dermal filler, but you can expect an experience shaped by Dr. Happe’s background as a board-certified physician and anesthesiologist. She prioritizes your safety and comfort, even as she carefully positions the injections for customized, natural-looking results.
The added volume will have a noticeable effect as soon as it is injected with an ultra-fine needle, though you will have to wait for some slight bruising and swelling to resolve in order to see the final result. A Restylane® treatment is generally quick and simple. Patients don’t experience much discomfort, and they can go home and resume their normal activities right away without any lengthy recovery time.
The results can last from six to 18 months, depending on the specific filler chosen, your individual metabolism, and other factors. Caring for your skin with a good skincare routine that includes keeping skin moisturized and protecting it from sun exposure can help to prolong the results of Restylane®. As the results are long lasting but temporary, you’ll eventually need to have more injections to maintain the desired effects.
Does Restylane® Have Side Effects?
Restylane® is a safe treatment approved by the FDA. Dr. Happe will discuss possible side effects with you during your consultation. As with any injectable treatment, there is a chance of bruising and bleeding. Patients may also experience swelling, itching, or discomfort at the site where they were injected—and allergies and infections can occur in rare cases. Side effects that do develop tend to be mild and resolve in just a few days.
How Do You Prepare For Restylane® Injections?
There isn’t much preparation needed before having injections of dermal fillers like Restylane®, but Dr. Happe generally recommends avoiding medications and supplements that increase the risk of bruising a couple of weeks before your appointment. This includes most blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications along with fish oil supplements. Consult with a primary care physician before making any changes to taking prescription or other medications.
If you have an upcoming social event to attend, it’s better not to schedule your Restylane® injections right before it, just to be sure you have a buffer that allows any side effects to resolve.
What Complements Restylane®?
The most effective cosmetic treatment for you depends on the types of wrinkles you have. Dermal fillers aside from Restylane® available at Dr. Happe Medical Aesthetics include Juvederm®, Bellafill®, Sculptra®, and Radiesse®, each with its own benefits. Unlike Restylane®, three of the fillers—Bellafill®, Sculptra®, and Radiesse®—are bio-stimulators that gradually encourage the skin to create more of its own collagen.
Dr. Happe can explain the differences in these fillers, as well as how they related to neuromodulators like BOTOX®, Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau™. Neuromodulators don’t add volume, but instead calm muscles that fold skin into wrinkles when they contract.
Restylane® adds volume and lift, but it can’t correct pigmentation and similar issues. If you’re concerned about hyperpigmentation, dull skin, sun damage, or other irregularities, you can try skin-resurfacing techniques like chemical peels and microneedling with collagen induction therapy, designed to even out the tone and texture of your skin.
