WHAT IS RENUVA?
Although facial fillers have many benefits, in some cases, some patients may find that they aren’t getting the results they want from these injectables, so they may seek out other options. Renuva is an alternative treatment that provides a very natural-looking outcome without needing so many injections or an “over-filled” appearance. While it provides similar effects to traditional fillers, it is not the same thing.
Renuva promotes fat growth in the area where it is injected. This treatment addresses contour deficiencies by helping to replace lost fat with new fat. When it is injected, Renuva forms an “adipose matrix”—some people envision a honeycomb matrix—that can be thought of as a scaffold for your own fat cells to populate. This matrix is made up of collagen, proteins, and growth factors, all of which eventually gets replaced by the patient’s own fat. Renuva injections are handled as an in-office treatment with downtime the same as what you would expect after Sculptra® or fillers.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN RENUVA TREAT?
Renuva is designed to help counteract volume loss in the face and neck. Treatments can add plumpness to the cheeks, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin tone. It is commonly used on areas of the face that naturally have fat cells, such as the cheeks, chin, jawline, temples, and nasolabial folds.
Renuva can also be beneficial to other areas as it can rejuvenate the backs of the hands, improve the balance of asymmetrical breasts, treat breast implant rippling, make indented scars or cellulite dimples less noticeable, minimize décolletage lines, or address liposuction irregularities. It can add volume to any part of the body where fat naturally exists.

- Two 3cc treatments of Renuva were administered to each side of the patient’s face.
- Each 3cc Renuva treatment was hydrated using 9ml sterile saline (12cc total volume per treatment).
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR RENUVA?
Renuva can be ideal for anyone who needs a refresh, in addition to patients who do not have much body fat to transfer with traditional cosmetic surgery techniques or who do not want to undergo surgery. Renuva is less expensive and less invasive than surgical fat grafting. It can be ideal for someone who is seeking small volume improvements or mild plumping effects, such as addressing divots and dimples.
WHAT ARE THE RESULTS LIKE AFTER RENUVA?
Another advantage of this procedure is that there is less post-injection swelling in comparison to traditional facial fillers. However, it’s important to recognize that the results won’t appear as quickly as they would for fillers. The adipose matrix will be replaced with your own fat cells within the following three months.
Since the process involves creating your own fat cells, the outcome will look very natural. Living cells form in the anatomical layer where they belong and will animate naturally. The results from this treatment are similar to those from autologous fat transfer or fat grafting—a cosmetic surgery treatment in which fat is harvested from an area of excess through liposuction, then transferred to an area where more volume is desired. One of the advantages of Renuva is that, unlike fillers, which break down over time, your own fat will remain in place, even as you continue to age. You will see 80 percent revolumization at three months. At six months, 100 percent of the improvement will be accomplished.
