Renuva injections are something of a revolution in the world of cosmetic treatments, since fat is such a tricky substance in the body. When you lose or gain weight, you can’t decide which areas of your body will shrink or grow. Fat storage is largely determined by genetics, so you can’t simply “wish” your belly smaller or your cheeks fuller via lifestyle modifications. With Renuva, however, you can literally direct your body where to focus its fat-building eNorts. That means you can slim down overall, while still enjoying a desired roundness and softness where you want it!
HOW DOES RENUVA WORK?
Most facial fillers focus on adding volume with a gel made of hyaluronic acid. While these treatments can be very eNective, since the formulas mimic the hyaluronic acid made naturally in the skin, not everyone gets the results they want from this strategy. Some patients with “filler fatigue” feel that dermal fillers give them an “overfilled” look, or they wish the results lasted longer.
Instead of introducing new artificial volume, Renuva taps into the body’s own fat-creating abilities by activating key processes in the area where it is injected. Its first step is to create a honeycomb-like “adipose matrix” (“adipose” is the technical term for fat-storing tissue). This matrix—build from collagen, other proteins, and growth factors—serves as a scaNold that is gradually replaced by fat cells.
Eventually, all that will remain is the naturally made fat, just like it was before the volume loss.
WHERE CAN RENUVA BE INJECTED?

WHAT MAKES AN IDEAL RENUVA CANDIDATE?
Renuva can be an ideal injectable treatment for anyone who wants a refreshed look— especially those who would benefit from a fat grafting procedure, but who do not want to undergo surgery or do not have much body fat to transfer. Renuva costs less and is a less invasive option than surgical fat grafting. It can be ideal for someone who is seeking small volume improvements or mild plumping eNects, such as addressing divots and dimples.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A RENUVA INJECTION SESSION?
No down time is needed after Renuva injections. Patients can resume their desired activities just about as soon as they would like, although the Dr. Happe Medical Aesthetics team recommends avoiding physical exertion—as in vigorous exercise—for about 24 hours after a treatment.
Patients who choose Renuva should expect some swelling in the injection area after their treatment, but it will be less than the swelling associated with traditional facial fillers. Another diNerence? Renuva results develop more gradually, so the volumizing eNects will not be visible right away. The process of natural fat cells replacing the adipose matrix takes months. You will see about 80 percent revolumization at the three-month mark. At six months, 100 percent of the improvement will be accomplished.
The gradual development of fat creates especially natural-looking results. Since living fat cells form in the areas where they already belong, they will not stand out as they adapt and move along with the surrounding tissue.
One of the biggest advantages of Renuva is the duration of the results. The gel from fillers breaks down over time, with the added volume lasting anywhere from six months to two years, depending on where it was injected. Fat cells have a much longer lifespan, and the new ones will remain in place, even as you continue to age. Every patient is diNerent, and each cell has its own lifespan, but the typical fat cell lives for about 10 years.
