Radiesse®
Restore Volume to the Lower Face and Hands in Newton and the Boston Area
Age-related volume loss impacts the face by causing contour changes and the development of creases and folds, but it also alters hands by giving them a more skeletal look. Radiesse® in the Boston area can address both of these problems by stimulating renewed collagen production. The result is a smoother, more youthful look in two of the body’s most highly visible areas.
Radiesse® is the first filler to be approved by the FDA for use in both the face and hands.

A little collagen can actually go a long way—especially when your own body makes it—which is why Dr. Holly Happe takes a conservative approach. Collagen production is gradual, so all Radiesse® injections should be made with a long-term view to avoid an “overfilled” appearance.
As a board-certified physician, Dr. Happe never loses sight of the fact that cosmetic treatments, while safe when administered by a trained and experienced professional in an appropriate setting, demand skill and a thorough knowledge of the product used. She has worked for years to develop techniques that minimize discomfort and maximize aesthetic results for dermal fillers.
What is Radiesse®?
While many fillers have a hyaluronic base to restore the water-binding molecule in the skin, Radiesse® is different. This injectable is a watersoluble gel filled with smooth microspheres made of calcium hydroxylapatite.
The gel adds noticeable volume once injected, but the true benefit of Radiesse® is the fact that it also stimulates specialized cells to create new collagen. As a structural protein, collagen gives the skin a firmer, smoother appearance. It also provides a framework for hyaluronic acid molecules, improving hydration. One injection of Radiesse® can stimulate collagen production for a year or longer.
After the body absorbs the gel and breaks down the microspheres, the natural collagen remains.

This collagen will also eventually break down, as all collagen does over time due to natural processes and sun exposure. Talk with Dr. Happe about a plan for ongoing maintenance to preserve a smooth, youthful appearance.

What Conditions Can Radiesse® Treat?
On the lower face, collagen loss and aging skin can lead to the development of a range of wrinkles and folds. Radiesse® is ideal for reducing the severity of deep smile lines (nasolabial folds) that resemble parentheses, marionette lines on either side of the mouth, pre-jowl folds due to sagging skin, downturned-looking corners of the mouth, and horizontal chin wrinkles.
On the hands, Radiesse® adds volume to reduce the visibility of veins and tendons.
Patients rarely have a single area of concern, so Dr. Happe can work with each person to address overall signs of aging, wherever they appear.
What is the Newton Radiesse® Experience?
Before beginning any sessions, Dr. Holly Happe performs a facial assessment, takes medical a history, and gets to know the patient. While Radiesse® is an effective filler, there are many options available, and Dr. Happe wants to be sure that each person is matched with their ideal treatment.
The length of a Radiesse® injection session depends on the location and number of treatment areas.
Though the word “injection” is closely associated with needles, Dr. Happe makes use of tools known as cannulas as much as possible. Their blunt tips allow them to push aside veins they encounter, as opposed to piercing the vessels and creating more pain, bruising, and swelling. Pain prevention and management is a particular priority for Dr. Happe, who is a board-certified anesthesiologist.
The volume added by the gel will provide a noticeable lift and smoothness, but remember: Microspheres suspended in the gel encourage collagen production, so the full benefit will take a few weeks to start to be apparent.
What Are the Side Effects?
Every treatment, no matter how brief, carries a risk of side effects. Radiesse® is no different. Before making any injections, Dr. Holly Happe outlines what to watch for and will answer questions about safety and results.
Patients who choose Radiesse® can expect side effects common to all fillers, including redness and discomfort, as well as some swelling and bruising. These should resolve entirely on their own.
What Are the Options Beyond Radiesse®?
Other fillers at Dr. Happe Medical Aesthetics include Juvederm®, Bellafill®, Sculptra®, and Restylane®, each with unique benefits. For facial lines that grow due to muscle activity as opposed to collagen loss, Dr. Happe offers BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin®.
